 CHAPTER ONE

  • INTR0DUCTION

This chapter, which is the opening chapter of this work dwells into the following areas:

Introduction, background to the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, research hypothesis, among others.

1.1     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

In the era of rapid technological changes and globalization, increase in productivity and efficiency of staff can only be achieved in an organisation, by training of staffs properly to enable the organisation cope with prevailing challenges.    Organisation is actively involved in the training and re-training of its works as a result of the fact that it is the trained workers who will manage and utilize other resource available effectively and efficiently such resource include raw materials, equipment and machineries.      Instead of traditional off-the-job training a clear tendency can be observed towards on-the-job training.      On-the-job training has well known has advantages such as, a strong between training and practice: which has positive impact on trainees motivation, skills acquired on the job learned more effectively, faster and with high retention levels, favourable cost-effectiveness, flexibility i.e on-the-job training is very flexible can be delivered just in time, and can be easily adapted to changes, and the transfer problem is minimised, since training is given on the site where the employee will work. Some benefit accneed with organisation training their employees are:

  1. The workers understand better the objective and policies of the organisation as it affect their organisation. This makes for easier administration by the management of the organisation.
  2. Workers acquire knowledge and practical skills needed to perform their job better.
  3. Training enables workers to equip themselves in area different from their job area. This includes training workers on areas of safety, health, e.t.c.
  4. Training enables the creation of positive attitude through clearifying the behaviours and attitude that are expected from the employee.
  5. To enhance productivity and achieve high level of efficiency from its workers through effective training of staffs in Nestle Nigeria plc.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM      

Most workers in an organisation have undergone different forms of training at one point or the other in the course of their jobs.

Some of these workers do not know why they are made to undergo particular training while benefits derive from training workers.

In addition in spite of the fact that studies have been carried out in the area, new happenings, ideas and issues have prompted the research.

This research work is aimed at finding out why workers undergo various forms of training especially on-the-job training in the course of their job.

This study also seeks to identify the native of training programme worker undergo; more so, these programme usually have different effect on the workers.

1.3     OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY  

This research work is aimed at determining the effect of on-the-job training on workers’ productivity in Nestle Nigeria plc in order to do this effectively the following objective are considered:

  • To view the perception of workers toward on-the-job training.
  • To determine, if thoroughly on-the-job training increase the effectiveness and efficiency of workers.
  • To find out, if there is any correlation between employee training and productivity.

1.4     RESEARCH QUESTION 

  1. Does training significantly affect workers productivity?
  2. Does training enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of worker?
  3. Does on-the-job training provide expected result and stimulate productivity?

 

1.5     HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY  

Ho:  Training does not significantly affect workers productivity.

Hi:  Training significantly affects worker productivity.

Ho:  There is no impact of employees’ training on employee’s perception on-the-job.

 

1.6     SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This project is intended to analyse the factors inhilibiting against the effectiveness of the on-the-job training on productivity of workers in Nestle Nigeria plc.

The study however, due to time constraint and for the purpose of analysis will be restricted to workers in Nestle Nigeria plc.

1.7     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study when completed will be of great use to Nestle Nigeria plc management as it will now be in a position to train employees and remunerate them accordingly.

New organisation set up will benefit from the report of this study as it will enlighten them on the importance of trainee on productivity of workers in an organisation.

More so, this research work goes a long way in finding out why workers undergo training and their responses to the various form of training they underg

This project will also highlight these factor that contribute to successful training of workers in Nestle Nigeria Plc. It will also reveal suggestion of workers on ways to improve on the job training in Nestle Nigeria Plc.

Lastly, employees themselves will be able to ask the important of an on-the-job training on their performance.

1.8     PLAN OF THE STUDY

This research is divided into five chapters, they are chapter one- this state the general introduction where background of the study, Objectives of the study, Significance of the study, stated hypothesis, research question, scope and limitation of the study are presented.

Chapter two – this reviews various literatures relevant to the study and gives historical background of the case study- Nestle Nigeria Plc.

Chapter three – this shows the methodology used in the research work.

Chapter four- is concerned with presentation, analysis, testing and implementation of the data collected in line with the problem statement and hypothesis.

Chapter five – gives a summary of the findings, offers, recommendation and then concludes the research work.

1.9     DEFINITION OF TERMS

TRAINING: This is a means of improving job performance by extending knowledge, inculcating and modifying attitudes so that individual can work in the most economical efficient and satisfying ways.

Training is the acquisition of knowledge, skills and competencies as a result of the teaching vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relates to specific useful competencies.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING:  It is simply “Knowing by doing” example, instructions, committee assignment, apprenticeship. Employee training at the place of work while he or she is doing the actual job.                                                       On-the-job training is describe as the process of teaching an employee to complete the key activities needed for their job after they are hired.

OFF-THE-JOB TRAINING:  employee training at a site away from the actual work environment. It often utilizes lectures, case studies, role playing, simulation, it takes place away from the immediate workplace.

GLOBALIZATION:- this is the process of international integration arising from the interchange of world views product, ideas and other aspect of culture.
