INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Study

A Computer Assisted Learning(CAL) is a software tool designed to manage users learning processes. CALs go far beyond conventional training records management and reporting. The value-add for CALs is the extensive range of complementary functionality they offer. Learner self-service (example; self-registration on instructor-led training), learning workflow (example; user notification, teacher approval, waitlist management), the provision of on-line learning, on-line assessment, management of continuous professional education, collaborative learning (example; application sharing, discussion threads), and training resource management (example;  instructors, facilities, equipment), are some of the additional dimensions to leading Computer Assisted Learnings. In addition to managing the administrative functions of online learning, some systems also provide tools to deliver and manage instructor-led synchronous and asynchronous online teaching based on learning object methodology. These systems are called Learning content management systems or LCMSs. An LCMS provides tools for authoring and re-using or repurposing content as well as virtual spaces for learner interaction (such as discussion forums and live chat rooms). The focus of an LCMS is on learning content. It gives authors, instructional designers, and subject matter experts the means to create and re-use e-learning content more efficiently. This project work is meant to implement and develop the use of tutorial software in teaching computer networking and administration. It is a package that provides one or various options of available facilities from which one can make a choice and then guide oneself through the instruction or learning processes.

1.1 Background of the Study

Teaching or instructing is one of the most important professions in the world. It is also one of the most difficult professions because of the glaring complexities of human behavior and the fact that formal education has not designed very effective methods of dealing within learners on individual basis.

Before now, the teaching of web designing has been made available only to a privileged few. Probably, computer user in training courses, students of computer related course in institution of higher learning and those who can afford to pay for their exorbitant prices in the conventional training centers.

For this reason, we have accepted to develop a teaching media for web designing (software) this has incidentally collided with the era of information revolution which has also been applied to different parts of our individual endeavors. This software is to benefit the general people at large.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Today, most African educationists and learners have little access or interest in the use of Computer Assisted Learnings. Up until recently, in most African institutes of higher learning, the face-to-face method of learning has been applied. However, there are always problems of getting   qualified   personnel with the required idea on now to impact this knowledge. This in turn hinders effective transfer of knowledge to long distance based students. Thus, the learning process can be exploited to its fullest if it can cater to distance based students, the cheapest and most efficient means is to teach as an expert through the use of software. This calls for the need to have a Computer Assisted Learning that can effectively cater to the needs of students anytime, anywhere and under any condition.  The cheapest and most efficient means is to teach as an expert through the use of software

In this context, one of the problem lie on how to interface man to the computer system and at the same time learns how the sources are shared. Other problem includes.

  1. Ineffectiveness in teaching arising from the problem of inadequate equipment or tools.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

Every research work has its own aim and objectives. The primary aim of this project is to design, develop and implement tutorial software to teach Computer Studies (Computer Assisted Learning).

The software will among other things as its objectives

  1. To speed up learning processes through the use of computer, thereby making it faster when compare to the human instructor.
  2. To bring learning environment closer to the learner through the use of computer and Digital Learning Management System (CAL)
  • To deliver online training and keep quality records.
  1. To engage students in learning anytime, anywhere and under any condition.

1.4   Significance of the Study

The use of Computer Assisted Learning goes a long way to solve the problems of face-to-face learning process. However, the computerization of the learning process will provide advantages such as the ease of distance-learning, proper management of student information, and will also help in prevention of data loss as documentation will be computerized and not manual. Also, this work will help in instructing students in studying their courses and also improve their attitude towards the use of the computer.

1.5 Scope of the Study

My intension in this work is limited to the development of the program that will be focused on teach management, proper documentation of student’s information and determines ways to effectively manage the learning process.

1.6 Limitations of the Study

A few factors affected my efforts towards a better development of this project work. The most prevailing being time factor, as other school extra curricula activities and studies had to be met with. There was problem of irregular power supply during the coding and typing of the project.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Computer: An Electronic machine that contains alterable instruction as the basis of accepting data from input device processes the data at the processing device and produces the result through the output device.

Computer Augmented/ Aided Learning (CAL): Any device designed to perform arithmetic or mathematical operation like a normal calculator.

Dynamic HTML (DHTML): An extension of HTML that gives greater control over the layout of page element of the ability to have web pages that change and interact with the users without having to communicate with the server.

Direct Access: A fast approach to external storage, provided by disk where information is not in a set of sequence.

Electronic Mail (E-mail): Correspondence or data transmitted over a telephone lines.

E-Learning: A web application allowing anyone to take classes on any subject and at all level on the internet.

Instruction: A command to a computer to set a parameter, execute an operation etc.

Input: To enter data into a computer for processing or storage using an input device like keyboard.

Operating System: A program that directs all the basic function of a computer providing the point of interaction between the different components and generally managing the entire system.

Output: The result produced by a computer and delivered to the user on the monitor screen or printer or other medium after command execution or processing of data.

Program: A set of direction that instruct the computer in the performance of a task. Also called software

Software: Complete set of executable instructions that tells the computer what to do.

System: An orderly arrangement of relate elements which can work together as a unit or may be configured to carry out their respective function.

System Analysis: The investigation of user requirement for computing facilities.

Network: A number of computers and peripherals interconnected so that they can communicate with each other and share resources.

Network Administration: A manager in charge of day to day monitoring and general management of the operations of a network.
